10 Things You Didn’t Know About The ER

I work in the ER as an ER scribe. Attached to the hips of an ER doctor for a good 10-12 hours. So I see a lot…A LOT. After working for 2 years,  here are a few things that I learned and wished you knew.

1. If we are even SUSPICIOUS that you’re acting “weird”, we will more likely than not order a drug screen.

This leads me to number 2. If we ask you if you do drugs, don’t lie because we would rather you be honest with us than your drug screen coming back positive for benzo’s, opiates, and marijuana etc. yeaaah you had fun last night! Now we have go call you out on your BS, how embarrassing.

3. If you have some kind of chronic problem like your back pain for the last 10-15 years, seriously don’t come to the ER. Granted ER doctors are smart, but they will NOT be able fix that permanently, please follow up with a specialist/orthopedic surgeon.

4. If you are coming to the ER for a “pregnancy test” you’re better off taking a home pregnancy test since we pretty much use that in our lab for testing. I think you would rather pay the $10 dollars for home pregnancy test than the whopping $1,000 dollar hospital bill you will be receiving.

5. EVERY SINGLE patient I’ve met who have COPD(emphysema) or CHF(congestive heart failure) have at time or another smoked. Doesn’t matter that you quit 30 years ago.

6. If you are have post surgical problems/infections, please go back to the doctor who did the surgery to fix it. It’s not very smart to go to another hospital/hospital system that doesn’t know anything about you.

7. Pseudo-seizures(fake seizures) are the absolute worst. One time we had a 15 year old girl whose mom took her out of school because her hand was shaking. In front of the doc and I, she stops shaking the hand and scratches her head and goes back to shaking again. Yes, we will know when you are faking a seizure.

8. If you have a list of health problems and take over 20 medications, we would like a nice list please.

9. If you stick any kind of foreign body in any inappropriate openings in your body, we will make fun of you behind your back and crack(hehe, see what I did there?) jokes all day to one another.

10. Please be patient, patients. Yes you’ve been waiting 5 hours but were tracking you as soon as you walked through the door and popped up on our computers. If you had a medically emergent condition, we would have taken you back already. We are already ordering labs/x-rays on you based on your chief complaint and will see you when we can. ER doctors rarely ever get to sit down and relax, trust me.

11. Be nice to your ER doctor, they are one of the few, if not the only doctor who will go see you without ever looking to see if you have insurance. AND they are the ones who decide if you get tylenol with codeine or dilaudid =P

List of things I’m doing with my year off

So everyone knows I’m in the process of applying to med schools (hopefully everything will be done and sent in by the end of June at the latest so I can FINALLY start my summer). Here is a list of things with the approximate financials worked out that I WILL (not just want, but WILL) do with my year off:

$3,500 2 weeks in Europe(France, Italy, England, Spain)

$1,000 (3-day)Weekend in vegas

$1,500 1 week Medical mission trip…Costa Rica? Brazil?

$2,000 family cruise to Cancun

$350 (2-day)Weekend trip to Austin—Can you believe I have not been

to Austin yet??

Read at least three REALLY good big books(I need

recommendations!)

Train and do a marathon

Go to a concert…I’ve never been to one!

=$8,350

Not bad at all considering I get paid pretty well working in ER which will fund my travels.  Let me know if you’re interested in joining me (:

Must Eat Places in Houston IMO

So people keep asking me where do I like to eat in Houston, so I’ve finally come up with a list (so you can stop asking me!) haha just kidding.

11. Which Wich- This is pretty much the better version of subway. When you walk in you’ll be greeted with a table of brown paper bags and red permanent markers and you just mark off what you would like on your sandwich. Best of all, all the sandwiches are only $5.

10. Café express- This came in at number 10 because it’s one of my favorite semi-fast food but still healthy places to have lunch. I like their soup, sandwich, and salad combo that’s like $8. I usually get the chicken sandwich, potato soup and spring mix salad.

9.Tokyo One- It’s hard to find a quality sushi buffet but this one isn’t bad! In the first room, you’ll find all the sushi and there are chefs ready to make you your custom soups. In the second room, there is an assortment of cooked foods from shrimp tempura to chicken and also desserts. Lunch is approx $13. Dinner is much better with lamb and crab legs etc but also more expensive $25-30.

8.Oiishi-This is my best friend and I’s favorite place to get cheap but yummy sushi. Go during their happy hour cause its 2 appetizers for only $4. I love their calamari and spider handroll!

7.Hobbit café- Newly discovered place that I love. They have friendly service and their food is delicious and their portions are HUGE. They also have a pretty awesome outdoor patio where you can sit and enjoy the weather. Last few times I was there I had their sweet potato fries, salmon burger, and regular burger.

6.The breakfast klub-Whenever you drive by this place, you will ALWAYS see a long line of people extending out from the door into the parking lot…yes it is THAT good. My favorite thing to get from there is their chicken and waffles. I’m such a southern girl ya’ll.

5.Crawfish and Beignets-They don’t do beignets anymore cause their crawfish is so popular. So everyone knows I LOVE LOVE LOVE crawfish and this is my favorite place to get it. The crawfish are HUGE, clean, spicy and delicious. Be warned that it is located in the food court area of Hong Kong 4 City Mall…and let’s be honest that place is getting a little run down.

4.Ruggles- I came here for one of my friend’s birthdays and I loved it. They use super healthy ingredients and organic food and …and recycle everything. GO GREEN! Their portions are HUGE and food is delicious. It’s slightly more upscale and the ambiance is really pretty.

3.Fogo de Chao-This is a Brazilian churrascaria steakhouse located on Westheimer which serves delicious all you can eat meats. They give you a little card that has a green(go) and red(stop) sign printed on it. When you have it on Go, cute waiters come by and cut you meat. They also have a huge salad bar. It’s pricey at $45/per person but soooo good!

2.Moon Tower Inn- 2 words…game hotdogs. This guy I was seeing took me here on one of our first few dates and I was thinking, “Really? You’re going to take me to go get hotdogs? wtf?” lol when we drove up to second ward (which is where it’s located) I was more like wtf?? But I was sooo wrong! Their hot dogs can only be described as orgasmic. The hotdog bun is made of pretzel(yum) and the dog itself(pheasant, boar, buffalo, duck, rabbit, etc) is slow smoked to perfection. Topped with spicy mayo cilantro onions…whatever you like. They only have outdoor seating…and potpourri so I suggest you go at home haha. This is kind of a hipster hang out place and they have bands play live sometimes. They also have all you can eat crawfish on Sundays but I have yet to go ):

1. Zake Sushi- If you’re my friend you’ve heard me raving about this place(if I haven’t taken you there already). It’s my ABOLSOLUTE favorite sushi restaurant! They have a spacious parking lot, BEAUTIFUL decor on the inside, kind of upscale and super hip. On weekends they blast loud techno-y music. I usually get their calamari, sky diver roll, zake roll, Volcano Roll, or Caterpillar roll, and finish with their fried ice cream. It’s one of the more expensive sushi restaurants but so worth it!

Dreams are the eraser dust I blow off my page.
They fade into the emptiness, another dark gray day.
Dreams are only memories of the plans I had back then.
Dreams are eraser dust and now I use pen.
